But what is a Slewing Ring?

Slewing Rings are large diameter antifriction bearings for the simultaneous transmission of axial and radial forces as well as tilting moments. They replace traditional solutions with fixed and floating bearings as well as king pin bearings. Frequently, this results in bearings with axial/radial bearing combinations with one bearing point. This can significantly simplify the design of the mounting structure and the installation of the bearings, which in turn reduces effort and costs.

 

Cost-effective and tried-and-tested, IMO antifriction bearings are available as:

 

  • Ball slewing rings, roller slewing rings, and ball-roller combination slewing rings.

What are hydraulic filters? A hydraulic filter is a component used by hydraulic systems to continuously remove contaminants in the hydraulic oil. This process will purify the hydraulic fluid and protect the system from damage created by the particle contents. Hydraulic filters are a crucial element of any system using hydraulic power and are designed to filter oil, water or other liquids, within a hydraulic installation application. Hydraulic systems have an increased risk of contamination due to wear of components, ingression from seals or low-quality liquid. Therefore no fluid power system should be complete without the use of a filter. Hydraulic filters help to keep the hydraulic fluid contaminant free.

 

Why are hydraulic filters used in hydraulic systems?

 

Hydraulic filters are used anywhere in a hydraulic system where particle contamination is to be removed. Particle contamination can be ingested through the reservoir, created during the manufacture of system components, or generated internally from the hydraulic components themselves (especially pumps and motors).

Return Line – Filter is placed directly on return line, can also be spin-on, in-line, or tank mounted

What is a Hydraulic Power Unit?

A Hydraulic Power Unit or HPU for short, in basic terminology, is a self-contained unit that consists primarily of a prime mover (either an engine or electric motor) a hydraulic pump, a valve and a hydraulic tank reservoir.

 

By utilising fluid to transmit power from one location to another, hydraulic power units can generate large amounts of power, which in turn can be used to drive hydraulic machinery.

Another way to think of a hydraulic power pack is that it is a portable power delivery system that holds energy for a hydraulic mechanism. A good analogy to think what a hydraulic power pack is, is to consider the role of an electric battery, which stores energy for a circuit to draw on when is required. HPU’s are used in a wide range of industrial applications and machines, especially where there is no direct access to a power source.

How is hydraulic power unit required power calculated?

Hydraulic power is defined as flow multiplied by pressure. The hydraulic power supplied by a pump is: Power = (P x Q) ÷ 600 – where power is in kilowatts [kW], P is the pressure in bars, and Q is the flow in litres per minute. ** based upon 100% efficiency; 90% efficiency would equate to 75 ÷ 0.9 = 83.3kW.

Hydraulic Cylinder Types

Throughout the hydraulics industry you will discover a wide variety of hydraulic cylinders. The most common differences between all types of hydraulic cylinders range from the material used to manufacture, the operating pressure and temperature, onto the wall thickness of the tube or end caps but also the methods used for connecting the end caps.

 

The most commonly used types of hydraulic cylinders though are single-acting and double acting cylinders.

 

What is the difference between single-acting and double-acting cylinders?

 

The most noticeable difference between the two is the number of connection ports. For a single acting cylinder, the oil flows into the single port and this is used to extend the plunger. The plunger is retracted then by spring, load, or gravity.

 

For a double acting cylinder, the oil flows into the bottom port and this extends the plunger. The plunger is then retracted by oil flowing into the second port.

 

Benefits of Single-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

 

  • It is of simpler design than the double-acting hydraulic cylinder
  • Lower maintenance due to it being manufactured using fewer parts, therefore less problems to potentially arise.
  • If control and quick retraction is not required or essential, then the single-acting cylinders are perfect for these tasks
  • Requires only 1 hose per cylinder

 

Disadvantages of Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

 

  • With only one port uses, this means less controlled retraction
  • The cylinder can only push in one direction
  • The spring can become suspectable to quicker wear and tear.

 

Benefits of Double Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

 

  • Due to the connection ports being situated at both ends this allows the piston rod the ability to move forwards and backwards.
  • By utilising the extra port, control of the plunger is far greater during retraction, and thus ensuring that it returns to its starting point every time.
  • For tasks that requires accuracy and repeatability then these hydraulic cylinders are the choice over single-acting hydraulic cylinders.

 

Disadvantages of Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

 

  • They require 2 hoses per cylinder
  • Are more complex in design and manufacture
  • The cost is greater in comparison due to the greater complexity.
  • The hydraulic cylinder will also require a pump with a 4-way valve

 

 

Other Types of Hydraulic Cylinder

 

Tie-Rod Cylinders

 

A large majority of manufacturing and industrial applications use tie-rod cylinders. They use high strength, threaded steel rods and nuts that run the length of the entire cylinder tube, to hold square or rectangular end caps to each end of the cylinder barrel. Seals are placed between the barrel and end cap to prevent leakage. Smaller hydraulic cylinders usually use 4 tie-rods, but larger bore cylinders can use up to 20.

 

A great benefit of Tie-rod cylinders over welded cylinders are that they are less complex than welded body cylinders and can be completely disassembled for service and repair.

 

 

Welded Cylinders

 

Welded cylinders have end flanges welded to the barrel and an end cap attached to each flange. End caps are secured in place by bolts that slip through holes in each end cap and thread into tapped holes in each end flange. Therefore, they are difficult for assembling and disassembling.

 

However, this construction is lighter and more compact than the standard tie-rod configuration. The compact construction therefore does make it more suitable for mobile applications.

What is the primary task of an External Gear Pump?

It is the central task of external gear pumps to convert mechanical energy (torque and speed) into hydraulic energy (flow and pressure). To reduce heat losses, Rexroth’s external gear units offer very high efficiencies. They are realized by pressure-dependent gap sealing and highly precise production technology.

 

 

Rexroth external gear pumps are built in four frame sizes:

Platform B, F, N and G. Within each platform different displacements can be realized by different gear widths. The pumps are available in the versions Standard, High-Performance, Silence and Silence Plus. Further configuration variants are given by different flanges, shafts, valve arrangements and multiple pump combinations.

How is the Rexroth Gear Pump Constructed?

The external gear pump consists essentially of a pair of gear wheels supported in bearing bushes and the housing with a front and a rear cover. The drive shaft protrudes from the front cover where it is usually sealed by the shaft seal ring. The bearing forces are absorbed by slide bearings. These are designed for high pressures and have excellent dry-running qualities, especially at low rotational speeds. The gear wheels have 12 teeth. This keeps both flow pulsation and noise emission to a minimum.

 

The internal sealing of the pressure chambers is achieved by operating pressure-dependent forces. This ensures optimum efficiency. On the outer face, the movable bearing bushes are pressurized with operating pressure and pressed as seals against the gear wheels. Special seals form the boundary of the pressuried zone. The radial sealing at the tips of the gear teeth against the case is provided by smallest possible gaps that are formed pressure-dependent between the gear wheels and the housing.

 

Pumping principle

Due to the teeth moving apart during the rotation from the tooth mesh, the gear chambers become clear. The resulting negative pressure as well as the atmospheric pressure on the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir cause hydraulic fluid to flow from the reservoir to the pump. This hydraulic fluid fills the gear chambers and is transported in them in the direction of the arrow (see sectional drawing) along the housing from the suction side to the pressure side. The teeth mesh again then, force the hydraulic fluid out of the gear chambers and prevent it from flowing back to the suction chamber.

The external gear pump consists essentially of a pair of gear wheels supported in bearing bushings and the housing with a front cover and an end cover.

 

The drive shaft protrudes from the front cover where it is usually sealed by the shaft seal. The bearing forces are absorbed by slide bearings. These bearings were designed for high pressures and have excellent emergency running properties, especially at low rotational speeds.

 

The gear wheels have 12 teeth. This keeps both flow pulsation and noise emission to a minimum. The sealing of the pressure chambers is achieved by forces depending on the working pressure. This ensures optimum efficiency. The working pressure generated in the gear chambers is transferred to the outside of the bearing bushings in specifically designed pressure fields in such a way that they are pressed against the gears and seal them up. The pressurized compression areas are limited by special seals. The seal in the area between the gear teeth and the housing is ensured by the smallest of gaps that are set depending on the pressure between the gear teeth and housing.

Bosch Rexroth PR4-1X Product Description

 Assembly

The pumps are valve-controlled, self-priming radial piston pumps with fixed displacement.

They consist essentially of the housing (1), eccentric shaft (2) and pump elements (3), with suction valve (4), pressure valve (5) and piston (6).

 

Suction and displacement process

Pistons (6) are arranged radially to the eccentric shaft (2). The piston (6) is guided in cylinder (7) and pressed against the eccentric (2) by the spring (8). During the downward movement of piston (6), the working chamber (9) in the cylinder (7) increases in size. The resulting negative pressure lifts the suction valve plate (4.1) from the sealing edge. This opens the connection from the suction chamber (10) to the working chamber (9). The working chamber fills with fluid. During the upward movement of piston (6), the suction valve closes and the pressure valve (5) opens. Fluid can now flow to the system via pressure port (P).

Bosch Rexroth PR4-3X Product Description

Assembly

The pumps are valve-controlled, self-priming radial piston pumps with fixed displacement.

They consist essentially of the housing (1), eccentric shaft (2) and 3, 5 or 10 pump elements (3), with suction valve (4), pressure valve (5) and piston (6).

 

Suction and displacement procedure

The pistons (6) are arranged radially to the eccentric shaft (2). The hollow piston (6) with the suction valve (4) is guided in a cylinder (7) and pressed onto the eccentric (2) by the spring (8). The radius of the piston running surface corresponds to the eccentric radius. The cylinder (7) provides sealing against a hemispherical element (9).

In downward movements of the piston (6), the working space (10) in the cylinder (7) is enlarged. Due to the resulting negative overpressure, the suction valve plate is raised from the sealing lip. Simultaneously, the connection from the suction chamber (12) to the working chamber (10) is realized by means of a radial groove (11) in the eccentric (2).

The working chamber is filled with fluid. In upward movements of the piston (6), the suction valve (4) is closed and the pressure valve (5) is opened. The fluid now flows to the system via the pressure port (P).
